Shout it from the rooftops! After a brief lapse in the domain name registration Cheese Is Still Fantastic is back up and running and making no sense.

Andrea and I came home last night from Ocean City, MD, where her job has an annual convention. As usual it was dismal and grey and half the stuff in town there was closed til next summer. But it was still an alright time, we had a good dinner at BJ’s on the Water. We originally planned to stay through today so we could take some pictures over there but it didn’t look like the clouds and drizzle were going to let up (and we missed Bailey and our own bed) so we came home early instead.
I’ve got a couple cameraphone shots flickr-ed and once I get through my film if there’s anything worth sharing i’ll post that up too.

Alex has relaunched CSSBeauty complete with *tada* a jobs section powered by my current random project dujour Ekwipment. It still has a couple little features he’s not using very much in there, but it’s looking pretty good to me.
Fingers crossed it will hold up well under some real user action and I’ll be able to crank out the next version (getting it closer to a public beta) over the weekend.

New round of Flock beta invites went out this evening, myself included. Trying out the integrated blog tool finally gives me something to do (for the moment at least) with that WordPress.com account I wouldn’t otherwise be using.

So I did pick up another domain for posting my little Vloggy bits to. Feel free to go take a look (I still need to redo the wordpress theme for it though): Boring But Short.com.

Meanwhile I’ve got a couple more random little video bits to play around with. This one’s Andrea’s aquarium. I’m not sure where Zim (her tiger oscar) is in there.

Okay, nothing coherent, really. I just finally shelled out the money for a QuickTime Pro key so I can get the videos off my cell phone converted from some random-ass format “the new mobile phone video file format” to something actually useful. So yeah, self-absorbed video portrait ahoy (aka: a 5 second snapshot of my daily commute).
(Obviously this is mostly only of interest to you if you subscribe to one of my RSS feeds. Here’s a feed that’s just Vlog stuff if you’re so inclined.)

…not to mention aimed at the windows types out there, but Lifehacker has been running a series on how to set up server applications at home so you can use them to do helpful stuff.

Really Getting Started in Rails
It’s true—I’m a little impatient, too. So in the interest of science, I’m running a little experiment, seeing if I can pick up Ruby on Rails without completely learning regular ol’ un-frameworked Ruby first. I’m learning as I go, and seeing how that works out.
If you’ve ever read the ONLamp “Rolling with Ruby on Rails” tutorial and wondered “Wait, what just happened?” (like me) then this may help explain things a little more clearly.

Kenguru and The Long Tail
Vehicles for people in wheelchairs aren’t terribly unusual, but they’re nearly always a modification of an otherwise stock car (typically a van, to allow room for the wheelchair). Such vans are often ungainly and extremely fuel-inefficient, and the modifications to allow wheelchair access are expensive. The Kenguru, designed by Hungarian rehabilitative services company Rehab Ltd., is in most respects the exact opposite from the modified van: small, efficient, and built from the ground up to fit the needs of wheelchair users.
Hat tip to Chris.

Call to action: The demise of CSS hacks and broken pages
We ask that you please update your pages to not use these CSS hacks. If you want to target IE or bypass IE, you can use conditional comments .
Remember all those CSS hacks everyone had to learn to get stuff to work right? (* html anyone?) All of those will make pages break in IE7 now. So all that stuff you did totally in CSS with hacks in it? Now you’ll have to go back and recode all that CSS to move your hacks into Conditional Comments to just give them to the version of IE that needs them.

Top Ten Web Design Mistakes of 2005
Go figure, I agree with the vast majority of what he says this time too.
That said, Wevah’s Neilsen tribute still cracks me up.
